NAIROBI, Kenya – Political speculations have intensified after fresh reports and public remarks suggested that President William Ruto could be considering former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka as his running mate in the 2027 general elections.
During a public address in Nyanza earlier this month, President Ruto openly acknowledged Kalonzo Musyoka as a formidable political force, stating he would “not mind facing Kalonzo” in the upcoming presidential race. However, insiders within the Kenya Kwanza coalition hint that the president may be contemplating a broader strategy, including the possibility of bringing Kalonzo into the fold as a running mate.
“In politics, you never say never,” commented Senator Tom Ojienda, a Kenya Kwanza member. “We must be open to realignments that reflect the evolving national interest. If someone from ODM or Wiper can strengthen our coalition, we must consider it.”
Kalonzo Firm on Opposition Stance
Despite the overtures, Kalonzo Musyoka has publicly dismissed claims of a behind-the-scenes deal with Ruto. Addressing his supporters in Machakos last week, the Wiper party leader reiterated his allegiance to the Azimio la Umoja opposition coalition.

“Let it be clear—I have no secret deal with Kenya Kwanza,” Kalonzo said. “We are committed to building a united opposition that will give Kenyans hope in 2027.”
Close allies of Kalonzo, including Kitui Senator Enoch Wambua, have gone further, declaring him as the opposition’s best bet to defeat Ruto.
“If there’s anyone who can send Ruto packing in 2027, it’s Kalonzo,” Wambua said during a campaign rally. “He has national appeal, integrity, and experience.”
A faction of Azimio MPs has already begun lobbying for Kalonzo to be named the coalition’s flagbearer, with many viewing him as a natural successor to former Prime Minister Raila Odinga. Raila has not yet declared whether he will run in 2027, but there are strong indications that he may endorse a younger leader.
Meanwhile, a political consultancy firm reportedly hired by Kalonzo’s team is conducting simulations and polling data to guide potential alliances. Among the options being analyzed is a Kalonzo–Rigathi Gachagua pairing, which could significantly alter the 2027 race dynamics.
Analysts believe Ruto’s gesture toward Kalonzo is not just about possible partnership—but a calculated attempt to neutralize the opposition by luring one of its top leaders. A Ruto-Kalonzo alliance could appeal to both the Ukambani and Mt. Kenya regions, giving the President a broader ethnic and geographic base.
However, the move could backfire within his own United Democratic Alliance (UDA), where loyalty and internal influence remain sensitive matters. Rift Valley and Mt. Kenya loyalists may resist any outsider ascending to such a prominent role.
“It’s risky for Ruto to shake up the existing power structure,” said political analyst Grace Mutua. “But politics is about risk and timing. Kalonzo brings something no current deputy can—an opposition-clean slate and strong regional support.”
While Kalonzo and Ruto dominate headlines, the opposition still awaits direction from Raila Odinga. Should he step aside, a formal endorsement of Kalonzo could solidify his candidacy. However, failure to unite Azimio under one ticket could benefit Ruto—especially if the opposition fragments into smaller camps.
Political observers agree that the next few months will be critical. Coalition negotiations, party primaries, and public opinion could all shift the landscape. The 2027 presidential race is shaping up to be a high-stakes political chess game. With Kalonzo Musyoka gaining ground as both a possible challenger and unlikely ally, President Ruto’s next move will be closely watched.
Whether a Ruto–Kalonzo ticket becomes reality or remains mere speculation, one thing is certain: Kenya’s political alliances are shifting, and the race to State House has already begun.
