Ghana is reeling from the shock of a devastating military helicopter crash that claimed the lives of two senior cabinet ministers and six other high-ranking officials in the Ashanti Region on Wednesday morning.

According to the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), the Z-9 military helicopter took off from Accra around 9:12 AM local time, en route to Obuasi for a national mining sector event. The aircraft lost contact with air traffic control shortly after takeoff and later crashed in a densely forested area in Adansi Akrofuom. No survivors were found at the scene.

High-Profile Casualties

Among the deceased were:

Dr. Edward Kofi Omane Boamah, Minister for Defence

Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, Minister for Environment, Science, and Technology

Alhaji Muniru Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator

Dr. Samuel Sarpong, Vice-Chairperson of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC)

Samuel Aboagye, former parliamentary candidate

Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, pilot

Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu, co-pilot

Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah, flight engineer

These individuals were key figures in Ghana’s security, political, and administrative landscape. Their loss is being described as one of the most significant tragedies in the nation’s recent history.

National Response

In a statement released from the Jubilee House, President John Dramani Mahama expressed deep sorrow and declared the event a “national tragedy.” He canceled all official duties for the day and ordered national flags to be flown at half-mast until further notice.

“The nation has lost dedicated public servants who were committed to advancing our national development agenda,” the president said.

Chief of Staff Julius Debrah also issued a statement of condolence and confirmed that a joint military-civilian board of inquiry has been formed to investigate the incident. Possible factors under consideration include technical malfunction, pilot error, and weather conditions at the time of the crash.

Public and Political Reaction

Ghanaians across the country have taken to social media to express their grief and condolences. Political leaders from both the ruling NDC and the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) have called for unity and calm during this difficult time.

As investigations begin and the country mourns its leaders, the tragic helicopter crash serves as a sobering reminder of the risks faced by public servants in the line of duty. Ghanaians await further details from the ongoing investigation and prepare for what is expected to be a state funeral to honor the fallen.
